A Few Days of Trout Spey
We don't always catch fish, but we always have fun trying. Some days, the fish just don't want a swung fly. And that's ok, we are happy just to be out on a cooler couple of summer days!

On a recent trip from this season, we asked OPST Ambassador Mike Pitan what was different about coming out West to target steelhead vs targeting the steelhead of his Great Lakes home. There is something super cool about being that close to the salt water and targeting fish that have only been in the freshwater for hours or less. But don't let us tell you!

Breaking Down a Run

In today's video, Mike McGovney talks about fishing a steelhead run, specifically one that has a narrow top and wide tailout. Many anglers will skip the top of the run, or start casting too far if they do decide to start high. The move is to start short, making short casts until you get out of the top of the run. Sit back and enjoy!

    Thanks for a great video Ben. Question for you. I assume the shooting line does not float? Also....I noticed someone online talking about using Berkley big game mono for the shooting line. Would you please cover the pros and cons to OPST shooting line vs the Berkley mono method? Thank you so much. Shane

    • @OPSkagit
      @OPSkagit 6 дней назад

      The shooting line floats. The Lazar Line has less memory than Big Game and has a better-calculated stretch. Any memory is easily stretched out of the Lazar Line, and it has a hydrophobic coating that increases durability, float, and shoot ability.

    OPST got my interest into spey casting back in 2016, I ain't picked up a single hander since. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one out here in NorCal fishing mid to small trout streams with a small "trout spey" rod. I tried scandi style lines, dug them for a bit but, you can accomplish the same thing with a floating tip on a OPST line just gotta keep your cast in the pocket "phonebooth" which I prefer for trout streams. All my lines for trout and steelhead are all OPST. Solid company. Keep it up with the quality product and videos.
